In today’s guide, in fact, I will explain How to make a Minecraft mod. Yes, you got it right, I will show you in detail how to give life to the object of your dreams within the title of Mojang. All this simply by using free tools and without going to put in any way hand to the game code. During the tutorial I will in fact explain with simple and quick examples how you use the software that allows you to make changes on Minecraft: in this way, I can assure you that, even if you feel you are a novice person with mods, you will be able to bring home the desired result.
What do you say? Are you ready to proceed? In my opinion, yes, since you have come this far and I see you very motivated in wanting to create your first mod for Minecraft. All you have to do is take some free time and follow the quick instructions below. There is nothing left for me to do, except to wish you happy reading and have fun!
Before going into the details of the procedure on How to make a Minecraft mod, I think you might be interested to know more about this possibility offered by the title of Mojang.
Mods are nothing more than “changes” that are made to the game. The user can then add objects not present in the original title or recreate real video game experiences that have not been provided by the developers. To give you a concrete example, some examples of mods are the ones I used for the guides on how to have the cape on Minecraft (mod Advanced Capes ) and on how to spawn Herobrine (mod Herobrine datapack ).
The mods are mainly used in the Java version of Minecraft for Windows and macOS , since the latter is well suited to adding content using jar files.
In fact, fans of the Mojang title have also managed to find ways to use the mods in the mobile version of Minecraft. However, one must go to modify the internal files of the game and this can compromise the gaming experience. My advice, therefore, is to leave it alone and use the “changes” only in the Java version of the game, on which I will focus on today’s tutorial.
In this regard, I inform you that the program to create mods that is used by enthusiasts is called MCreator and, to use it, it is necessary that the system in use meets the following minimum requirements.
- Operating system: Windows 7/8 // 8.1 / 10, OSX Leopard or higher;
- Processor: dual-core Intel / AMD;
- RAM: 4GB;
- Internal memory: 280MB;
- Internet connection required.
To make MCreator run better, developers recommend referring to the following requirements.
- Operating system: Windows 7/8 // 8.1 / 10, OSX Leopard or above 64-bit;
- Processor: quad-core Intel / AMD;
- RAM: 8GB;
- Internal memory: 500MB;
- Reliable internet connection required.
For more details on the requirements, I suggest you take a look at the official MCreator website (in English). If, on the other hand, you do not know how to compare this data with that of your computer, I invite you to consult my guide on how to see the characteristics of your PC .
How to install MCreator
After explaining, in detail, what they are for and how the mods are managed on Minecraft, I would say that you are ready to proceed with the installation of MCreator : the program that will allow you, in fact, to create them.
The Java version of Minecraft is very popular on computers running Windows and therefore you may want to learn how to install MCreator on this platform.
To proceed, connect to the official MCreator website and press the Download button in the center of the page. At this point, depending on the architecture used by your operating system, press the 64-bit or 32-bit icon , located next to the EXE Installer . I remind you that in doing so, you will download the latest version of MCreator available, while if you have an “old” version of Minecraft you can find the previous files on the dedicated page on the Mcreator portal .
Now, open the MCreator [version] [Minecraft version] Windows [architecture] .exe file you just downloaded and press successively on the Next , I agree , Install and Finish buttons . In this way, MCreator will be installed on your computer and will start automatically.
For more details on how to install MCreator for Windows, I recommend you take a look at the official guidelines (in English).
Installing MCreator is very simple even on macOS : all you have to do is connect to the official website , click on the Download button and press the 64-bit button located next to the DMG image item , in order to download the program to your computer.
When the download is complete, open the MCreator [version] [Minecraft version] macOS [architecture] .dmg file that has just been downloaded and drag the MCreator icon into the Applications folder . You may be asked to enter your computer’s local password . If you don’t know how to open the Applications folder on macOS, just press the Go item in the bar at the top and select the word Applications .
Perfect, MCreator is now properly installed. On the first start, you will need to right-click on the software icon and select the Open item twice in succession (this operation is necessary only on the first start and serves to bypass the macOS restrictions against applications from non-certified developers) . For more information on MCreator for macOS, I invite you to consult the official guidelines (in English).
How to create a Minecraft mod with Java
Once you’ve successfully installed the MCreator program, it’s time to start creating your own custom Minecraft mod.
At the first start, you will be asked if you want to register a Pylo account: you can safely press the Skip button , since the program can be used without having to publish your creations on the platform. At this point, press the + icon (New workspace), enter the name of the mod (its ID will be automatically generated), select the version of Minecraft you have and press the Create new workspace button .
The initial MCreator project page will appear on the screen: from here you can access all the tools necessary to create the mod. At this point, all you have to do is press the green icon + , present at the top left, select the element you want to add to the game (eg Armor / Armor, Mob / Enemy, GUI / Card, Achievement / Objective and so on) and complete the various fields required.
To give you a concrete example, I will explain how to create a new food: the donut. To do this, press the + green icon on the top left and select the Food item from the screen that opens. After that, enter the name “Donut” and press the Create new food button .
Passing this step too, click on the Food Texture box and press the Import texture button . After selecting the image file from your computer (which must be in PNG format ), click on the Select button first and then on the Next page button , at the bottom right.
Type the name of the food (Name in GUI), select its category (in this case leave Food / Food), choose the maximum number that this element can have for each slot ( Stack size , usually it is 64), choose the nutritional value (Nutritional value, how much it cures that food), check the boxes to decree if it is a dog food, if it is always edible (edible) and if it has a similar effect to potions.
Then enter the speed at which the character can eat this food (ex. 32) and the animation that is displayed on the screen when you use it (Eat / Eat or Drink / Drink). In this case, I left everything unchanged and simply entered the name “Donut”. Once everything is set, first click on the Next page button and then on the Save mod element button .
Perfect, now you have correctly created the donut and the time has come to try the mod on Minecraft. All you need to do to test your mod is to press the Play icon (green arrow to the right), located at the top right. In this way, a Minecraft simulation will start which will allow you to test your mod. By pressing on the Mods item and scrolling through the list you can already see that the mod you have created is active.
At this point, press on the Singleplayer item , select the word Create New World , type the name of the temporary game , select the Creative mode and press the Create New World button on the bottom left. Then, press the E button on the keyboard, select the compass icon located at the top right, search for “donut” in the search field and move the donut icon to one of the empty spaces at the bottom.
Once you have verified that everything is working correctly, you just have to go back to the main MCreator screen, select the Workspace item at the top and press first on Export to JAR and, subsequently, on I agree, export the mod .
I remind you that, to publish your mod and then make it downloadable to everyone, you must be the owner of all the content present in it. For example, the donut mod may not be publishable if made using an image made by other people and protected by copyright.
Having said that, let’s move on. Now you just have to enter the name of the jar file , select the folder where you want to save it and press the Save button .
Well: you have just created your first mod. In case you didn’t know how to apply it, I suggest you consult my guide on how to install mods on Minecraft . Alternatively, you can also use the Forge profile and apply the jar file in the way I explained in the guide on how to have the cape on Minecraft for free .
