From the very beginning of our existence, the human race was searching for something that could save them from danger. After years and years of struggle, they invented fire. This one invention changed the whole face of the race. Developing fire not only gave us warmth. But it gave us another blessing. And that is light. In the modern-day, light has been an unavoidable portion of our lives. After the invention of electricity, light bulbs became a priority for humans. Thomas Alva Edition is accredited for the innovation of the first every commercially successful ‘Types of Light Bulbs.’
But he was not the first one to attempt—neither the only successful one in creating light from electricity. We will be going through the history behind light bulbs first. Then we will be going through all the types of light bulbs there is in the world. This will give us a significant aspect of knowledge. That is why you must stick with us and hear us out. I bet this will change the conception of yours in different types of light bulbs.
Light and Electricity
It was the year 1802 when Humphry Davy was attempting to make an electric battery. His experiment was a regular practice after years and years of research. One fine day, he connected the wires of his shower with a piece of carbon rod to see what will happen. This was the world’s first-ever electric light. But this was not applicable in various sectors. As we speak, the light was too bright to control, and it was impossible to apply.
But what Humphry made created massive tension in the world. Scientists started to rediscover the concepts of electricity and started to find out every possible way of creating light from that. Over the next seven decades, many scientists pulled off many versions of light bulbs, but none of them were suitable for commercial applications or mass production. On the top, these models and versions were not efficient at all. This created a considerable tension among the communities.
But the ray of hope finally shined in Edition Electric Company. When Thomas Alva Edition invented the very first commercially appropriate light bulb for the world in 1878, there are some primary reasons for the light bulb that Edison build being commercially applicable. First of all, the consumption of electricity and the brightness of the morning. Then come the resonance and durability of the filament.
After judging all these factors, his version was granted as the first-ever commercially appropriate light bulb. But today, we have come a long way. Now, light bulbs have been in different forms.
Types of light bulbs bases
As of today, there are various types of light bulbs. But we can differentiate the types into four categories according to their uses and durability.
- Incandescent
- Halogen
- CFL
- LED
These are the four types of light bulbs. Now, we will be looking into each of them in a more detailed manner. First of all, we will be looking at the first one. I am talking about Incandescent lights.
Incandescent Light Bulbs: The Commoner!
You have probably seen an incandescent bulb in your household. This is the cheapest light bulbs in the market. The light is hot. In some incandescent light, the heat is generated at a very significant rate. These are often used in light heaters. But we are focusing on the sunshine today. As I said before, the light is hot. Incandescent light is cheap but is not as efficient as you want them to be. These consume a considerable amount of electricity. These lights typically last a year or so. It lasts longer than halogen lights. But the LEDs and CFLs last longer than incandescent.
So, if you want to give a considerable amount to the power development board, then use Incandescent lights.
Halogen Lights: Imitation of Natural Light
Halogen lights are a good option if you want a natural ambiance in your households. This gives daylight like a feeling in the room. So, these lights have a decent demand in the market. On the other hand, these are more efficient than incandescent light bulbs. But Halogens burns off quicker than any other lights. This is a massive problem for this type. Other than that, this is still a good option for the users out there.
These lights are cheap. But some variants can crank up the value as well. Whatever the case is, halogen light is a popular option. This still burns the right amount of electricity. So, consumption is still a bit expensive than CFLs and LEDs. But on the brighter side, it is less costly than incandescent lights.
CFLs: Compact Fluorescent Lights
CFL is a revolutionary product in the market as they can emit a wide range of lights according to different variants and models. So, these are the right choice for daily household uses and stuff. CFL takes a little bit of time to warm up. But when it is warm, it gets brighter. So, these lights can emit more light in long term use. But these contain gas ions. So, you got to have some precaution while using it or mainly disposing of the used light. These lights consume a little amount of electricity compared to halogens and incandescent.
These lights are pretty bright. So, it is often seen used in large areas and rooms where more light is needed. On the other hand, these lights can be recycled. So, these are not as cheap as the previous two. But the recycling factor plays a huge role in its popularity. But the LEDs are still the most efficient of them all.

LEDs: The Cost-Efficient King!
When the LED lights were introduced, people came down rushing for those as LEDs are simple to light-emitting diodes. So, these consume almost nothing. And the brightness of a light is very high. On the other hand, these lights do not emit any sort of harmful materials like mercury. These are not as cheap as the other products but can last up to 50 thousand hours. So, the extra pennies does pay off quite nicely. Also, these lights are area directed. That means these are pretty on point, and the direction of the flow is fixed. So, LEDs are used as task lightings. Task lighting is referred to such conditions where light is needed in a specific place. These are pretty on point and efficient.
So, LEDs are the new picks of the people nowadays.
These were the lights and their types. Now we will be discussing the other aspects. The other elements are lumen counts, types of holders, and pricing. We will also be featuring the applications of light and also set a mock-up test of ideal lighting for a typical home.
Types of light bulbs: Lumen Counts and Wattage
Watt is referred to as the amount of energy that the light consumes. If a light consumes 15 watts in an hour, then the light will burn out 15 watts-hour or 15 units of electricity.
As we said before, the LEDs consume a lot less than the other electric light bulbs. The reason is that these are simple diodes. Diodes consume less energy. But there is another scale where a light can be measured. Lumen count is simply the brightness of the lights. Different lights create different brightness. For example, a standard 40 Watts incandescent light bulb creates almost 450 lumens of light. So, you can see the energy consumption. A standard LED Bulb saves up to 7 times the energy.
That is why LEDs are the best pick in this current generation. There are other types of light bulbs, but these are the popular ones.

Light Holders and Light Bases
Light holders are the ports where the lights are plugged in. These are mainly wall outlets. The light bases are the tip of the lights that are connected to the holder to pass on electricity. These are of various types. The most common is the screwed holders and bases. There are many types of holders. These are more secured and have no chance of falling off from the outlet. Another popular one is the two-pin click holders. These are like hooks, which can be attached to the holders. These are safe. But when the pin is broken, the light cannot be attached to the holder.
Some of the lights, especially halogens, comes in three-pin bases or even in vertical two pins or four pins bases. But these are not that applicable in regular life.
Now, we will be going through some of the basic needs of light sources in regular households.
Lights in Regular Households
Basically, lights are an essential part of our regular life. But we often misunderstand our needs. That is when we use the wrong source of light in the wrong places.
There are certain criteria that are needed to be followed when you are lighting up a specific space. Suppose space is a hall room. Then you will be asking for a decent ambiance, not too bright, not too dim. The accurate word should be funkiness. So, you will need 20 lumens of light per sq—feet in bedrooms and halls. But when you are in corridors and hallways, then you will need less light. So, 10 lumens per sq.
A kitchen is a place where you will need a good quality lighting. So, it would help if you had bright lightings for that. Typically 30 to 40 lumens per sq. Feet is ideal for the job. Also, you can use similar lighting for the dining space as well.
In the bathrooms, a little bit of extra lighting is always needed. So, 70 to 80 lumens per sq. Feet is essential for the lighting of the bathrooms and restrooms.

An Ideal Lighting for an Ideal House
There is no concept of idealism in the living. Some consider this as ideal. Then there are others who consider different perspectives. However, I am sharing my conceptions here. So, do give it a try and let me know what you think.
First of all, I am an efficient user. So, I tend to use LEDs in my house. First of all, I like the bedrooms and the hall to be in the ambiance. So, I use white LEDs for proper lightings. But when I am sleeping, I like to dim the lights. It is more productive if you use smart lights.
The bathrooms are very bright in my house. The kitchen is also bright and vivid. But the main concept of the lighting is to use it efficiently and burn less energy. Some of us like to use multiple lighting options to spice things up. I also like dynamic lightings as well. This allows you to have a good quality lighting experience.
Wrapping Things Up!
So, I hope you guys have learned a hell lot today. The concept of lighting is to clear our visions and change our perspective. But as we speak, energy is not recyclable. So, when you are keeping the lights on, that means you are burning unwanted energy.
There will be a time when humans will use all the natural resources to fulfill their desires. This will be the main cause of our destruction. These are still avoidable. All you need to do is to be smart!
